Louis McKinley, Funeral Director 60 Years, Dies
Louis G. McKinley, 86, a funeral director in Syracuse for more than 60 years, died yesterday at his home, 1802 James st., after a long illness.
A native of Cape Vincent, he attended the Renauld School of Embalming and upon graduation came to Syracuse and entered business.
Mr. McKinley, a member of the Holy Name Society of St. John the Evangelist Church, was one of the first members of the Onondaga County Funeral Directors Association.
Mr. McKinley maintained funeral parlors in W. Fayette st., opposite the Onondaga pottery Co., until 1934 when he moved to his present location at 308 N. McBride st. He was associated with a brother, the late Bernard McKinley, under the firm name of McKinley Brothers.
It was to McKinley's Funeral Home that most of the 16 victims of the nation's worst automobile racing tragedy were taken in 1911. The car of Lee Oldfield crashed thru a wooden fence on a turn at the State Fair during a 100-mile championship race and plowed into the crowd.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Hickery McKinley; a brother, Frederick A. McKinley; a sister, Mrs. Lottie Elting; two nephews and a niece.
Services will be at 8:45 p.m. tomorrow at the home and at 9:15 a.m. in St. John's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Baldwinsville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
