An Afflicted Family

Kaysville Invalids Devotedly Attended to By Their Parents

Kaysville, Aug. 21-Yesterday afternoon the angel of death, whose visitations usually bring trials and leave desolation, came as a ministering angel of mercy to the afflicted home of William Barnes of this place, and took from it a son, whose existence for nearly 20 years has been a burden to himself and to his attendants. The deceased young man was about 23 years of age. He was born with all of the faculties normally developed, but at a very early age his eyesight failed and a malady seized him which, as it developed, robbed him of one sense after another until, during recent years, he has been a helpless, hopeless, incurable imbecile, not having power to recognize those around him, and utterly unable to move to assist himself in any manner. His parents have devotedly attended him during all these years. They have exhausted the means at their command in procuring medicines and employing physicians, but to no avail.

Three other members of the family have been afflicted in like manner. One of them died some time ago, and the other two, a boy 16 years of age, and a girl several years younger, are now suffering in the midst of a living death, with no hope of recovery. The two last named are blind and almost helpless, and, by slow stages, the awful malady is carrying them to the same condition in which their elder brother has just died.

Skillful physicians who have attended the patients have declared that the cases are without parallel in medical history, and they are free to say that the singular affliction baffles all medical skill. Nothing that has been done for any of the unfortunate afflicted ones has given more than temporary relief, and there seems to be nothing to do but to await the day when physical strength shall be exhausted and death shall come. Several members of the same family have brown to manhood and womanhood with no evidences of the malady about them.

The unfortunate young man's funeral will be held on Tuesday next. The entire community has a feeling of profound sorrow for the afflicted family.
