Eugene L. "Gene" Arbuckle, 71, of Kiel peacefully went to be with his Savior on Saturday afternoon February 22, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on March 21, 1942 in Odanah, WI son of the late Aloysius & Frances (Neveaux) Arbuckle. Gene attended grade school on the Bad River Reservation in Odanah until 1952. His family moved to Manitowoc where he attended St. Mary's and was a 1960 graduate of Lincoln High School. He enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Bremerhaven, France and Vietnam serving as an MP during much of his time in the military. After returning to Wisconsin he worked on coal boats on the Great Lakes for a short time. Gene was united in marriage to Ann Schmelzle. He went on to attend Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to become a police officer, carrying on a long family tradition in law enforcement. He was elected Who's Who in American Junior Colleges for Northeast WI and graduated cum laude in 1973. He was hired by the New Holstein Police Department and faithfully served the community for 21 years. He also served with the Calumet County Tactical Squad during that time. He retired from duty in July of 1994. Gene had been enrolled at Fox Valley Technical College for sign language until his illness required him to fully retire. Gene surrendered his life to Jesus Christ on December 30, 1989. He became and active member of Faith Alliance Church. Gene also became affiliated with Heart-Fire Ministries in Milwaukee, a street based mission to the homeless. He took part in mission trips to Mexico and New Orleans. In 2001, Gene was united in marriage to Doloris "Honey" Meinert and she joined him in the ministry he loved. Gene later joined Jubilee Assembly of God and was also a volunteer with United Ministries of St. Nazianz and New Holstein. Gene was a proud veteran and member of the New Holstein American Legion. He was also very well known throughout the area golf courses. Survivors include his wife; Honey Meinert, Kiel, two sons; Chad Arbuckle, Whittier CA, Nathan Arbuckle, Sturgeon Bay, Honey's loving family; Cathy (Jeff) Knuth, John (Kelly) Schisel both of New Holstein, Mike (Linda) Schisel, Manitowoc, David Schisel, Sycamore IL. Gene is also survived by grandchildren; David & Faith Knuth, John & Bradley Schisel, Krystal & Amanda Schisel. his sister; Sylvia (Rick) DeGrand, Kiel, sisters-in-law; Trish Arbuckle, Cincinnati, OH, Katherine Arbuckle, Greenville, OH, Marge Arbuckle, Odanah, WI, along with numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; Aloysius, Patrick, Leslie and Bruce Arbuckle. A Celebration of Gene's Life will take place on Thursday February 27, 2014 at 6:00pm at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th St. Kiel with Rev. Dorcas and Rev. Kenneth George leading the time of sharing. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 3:00pm until 6:00pm. A time of visitation will also take place on Saturday March 1, 2014 at the Frost Home for Funerals, Ashland, WI Burial will take place in the Odanah Cemetery. Gene's family would like to extend all their thanks to grandsons, Bradley and Dave and family friend Patti Zachman for all their extra help and support. They would also like to thank the VA staff in Milwaukee and Appleton as well as Comfort Keepers, Sheboygan and Hospice Advantage for the care and compassion shown to Gene and his entire family.
