Bernice Odelia (Delzer) Brucklacher was born on April 30, 1931 to Theodore and Augusta Rose (Stroschein) Delzer of rural Freeman, S.D.

The family moved to Menno, S.D., where Bernice attended 12 years of schooling. Then she moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., with her parents and was employed for a year at John Morrell Company. In 1950, Bernice married LaVerne Brucklacher and they made their home on a farm in rural Freeman. Then in 1951, she went with LaVerne for two years while he was in the service and then returned to the farm.

Bernice and LaVerne were blessed with five children: Douglas, Teresa, David, LuAnn and Sandra.

After her children were grown, Bernice worked for 10 years as a kitchen dietary aide at the Freeman nursing home. She also worked part-time at Gurney's Seed Company and at Fensel's Greenhouse.

LaVerne and Bernice retired in Freeman in 1999. Due to poor health, Bernice moved to Oakview Terrace in September, 2002 where she remained until her Nov. 16, 2013 passing.

Church and family were very important to Bernice. In her earlier years, she was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Menno and later the Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Following her marriage to LaVerne, she joined the Salem Free Lutheran Church of rural Freeman and remained a member until her death. She was a Sunday school teacher and received a 50 year pin for her service in the church's Ladies Aid.

Bernice is survived by her husband, LaVerne J. Brucklacher of Freeman; children: Douglas (Karen) Brucklacher, Watertown, S.D., Teresa Goertz (Lon) Reidburn, Clark, S.D., David (Lori) Brucklacher, Longmont, Colo., LuAnn (Jon) Kayl, Renner, S.D., and Sandra (Dave) Poppenga, Renner. She will also be missed by sisters: Bonny (Larry) Bingen, Minneapolis, Minn., and Betty Barnes, Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Amy Dougherty, Amber (Steve) Stanton, Sara (Dan) Poppen, and Brian (Shelly) Goertz; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and brothers- and sisters-in-law: Maxine Delzer, Helene Delzer, Sid Barnes, Alvin and Lenore Brucklacher, Harold Brucklacher, June Brucklacher, Mac and Alice Melin, and Ervin and Marlene Brucklacher; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents Ted and Augusta Delzer; brothers Lavern and Dale; and son-in-law Dale Goertz.
