Mr. Mitchell passed away on February 21, 2014 in Oklahoma City. He was 84 years old.

Sam Mitchell was born on January 14, 1930 near Elgin, OK to Harlen & Elsie (Sims) Mitchell. Soon after graduating from Elgin High School in 1947, he went to work at Consolidated Gas Co., which later became ARKLA then Center Point Energy. He was pipeline superintendent for quite a few years during a 35 year career. He entered the military in 1951 where he served in Korea for 3 years. He was in the 913th Field Artillery Division US 8th Army Division. His Battalion was decorated while in Korea 1. With a President Unit Citation 2. Two Battle Stars – one for the Battle of White Horse Mtn. and one for Papason Mtn. 3. Sigmon Rhe Ribbon for helping Korea 4. Good Conduct Medal, this was an Individual Award. In his 35 years with ARKLA he never left his roots of ranching behind. He bought his first farm in 1954. He spent his happiest days with his family on the ranch and acquired more as he could. He often joked and said "I don't want to own everything, I just want to own what touches mine." His dream of full time ranching became a reality in 1981 when he was able to retire from ARKLA. By now he had acquired more grassland and had built his herd to about 500 cows. When asked how many cows he had he often said "If you CAN count them then you don't have enough." Even in the families busiest years he took the whole family to New Mexico every summer. He always showed everyone that family comes first. Just like his Dad and Granddad before him, he enjoyed what he did and always looked forward to tomorrow even in the hard times.

He married Naomi Ridley on December 26, 1950. They had 64 blessed years together. He is survived by his wife Naomi, three daughters, Christie and husband Jerry Pettijohn, Cheryle and husband Rick Bussey, Charlotte and husband Donnie Snider, one son Sam D Mitchell and wife Duane. There are 13 grandchildren – Katrina Harrelson, Luther (L.W.) McGee, Jenny New, Tony Richardson, Amy Griffin, Dana Massey, Carly Morris, Amber White, Casey Snider, River Mitchell, Montana Mitchell, Clancy Mitchell, and Oaklee Mitchell. There are 14 Great Grandchildren – Emily Evans, Tyler McGee, Shaeleigh McGee, Carson New, Gunner New, Chayton Snider, Gracie Snider, Paisley Griffin, Riley Matheney, Kinlee Alvarado, Devan Snider, Briar White, Canyon White and Embry Snider.
