Valerie Stevens Young (Nanny), age 94, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Sunrise Rehabilitation and Care Center. Valerie was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1920 in Marion, NC. She was the daughter of the late Baxter Clayton Stevens and the late Nellie Putnam Stevens. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Charles Young; brothers, Jack Stevens, Tracy Stevens, Brown Stevens, Marvin Stevens and sisters, Marjorie Johnson and Margaret Stevens.
Saddened by the loss of Mrs. Young are two children, Baxter Lynn Young and wife Gail of Marion and James Morris Young of Marion; one sister, Marcella Johnson of Marion. Additionally, six grandchildren, Amy L. Dula and husband Jonathan of Morganton, Laura C. Wilson and husband Michael of Hudson Oaks, Texas, Aaron L. Young and wife Tamara of Hudson Oaks, Texas, Joel E. Young and wife Jennifer of Boone, Charles A. Young and wife Sally of Findlay, Ohio and Jonathan M. Young and wife Amy of Raleigh. Also surviving are thirteen great-grandchildren.
Valerie was born and raised in the Clinchfield Community in Marion. She devoted her life to her children and family after the death of her husband, Lewis, who died in 1956. Born on Valentine's Day, she was a "valentine" of a mother loved by her sons and all of her family and friends. She loved reading, sending and receiving cards and letters to family and friends. She will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home with Elder Joel E. Young officiating. Interment will follow at the Will Young Cemetery in Yancey County.
