Korean War Veteran
Roland "Johnny" Stoecklin, age 90, of Alhambra, IL, passed away at 8:46 am Tuesday, December 31,2013, at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland IL. He was born on July 18, 1923 in Alhambra, the son of the late Edward Sr. and Mary (Lang) Stoecklin.
He married Anna Marie Lesicko, August 27, 1949, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livingston, IL. She preceded him in death on May 28, 2011.
Roland was a lifelong resident of Alhambra, IL. He attended Alhambra High School for 3 years, graduated from St. Jacob High School and was active in sports. He served in the U.S. Navy near the end of WW2. He was discharged in 1946, later called up from the reserves in 1951 and served in the Purser's office on board the U.S.S. Antietam CV36 aircraft carrier. It ran nearly 6,000 sorties of all types between November 1951 and March 1952 in the combat zone off the coast of Korea. Stateside again, Roland worked for the U.S. Postal Service delivering mail on the rural route of Alhambra and Marine, IL, until his retirement at age 62. He also sold advertising with Goldman Associates for many years. After retiring, he drove a school bus for the Highland School District. He was a former member of the Alhambra Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include a daughter: Rolene K. Barton, Waukegan, IL and a son Ross A. Stoecklin, Alhambra, IL, one brother: Marion "Babe" Stoecklin of St. Charles, MO, two brother in-laws: William Harris, Alhambra, IL, and George Lesicko, New Douglas, IL, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son: Philip L. Stoecklin on May 18, 1953, sister Delores Harris, and seven brothers: Vernon "Frisch", Edward "Shooter", Leland, Otis, Richard, Newton, and Leonard Stoecklin.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 1, 2014, from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Dauderman Mortuary, Alhambra, Illinois.
Memorial Service will be Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. at Dauderman Mortuary, Alhambra, Illinois.
Interment will be at Salem Cemetery, Alhambra, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to the Alhambra Volunteer Fire Department or the Highland Youth Sports Advisory Commission (HYSAC).
