Fate Pursues Family

William Barnes of Kaysville Dead After Losing Nearly All Children

Kaysville, April 11-William Barnes, an early settler of Kaysville, died at 6 o'clock this morning of a somewhat mysterious complaint that affected his head, from which he has been suffering for considerable time. Though his health has been breaking for a year he was not thought to be in a serious condition, and as late as last evening he was conversing with his family with apparently no premonition of the end. The deceased was born January 31, 1844, in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England, and was a son of the late William Barnes, and a nephew of Hon. John R. Barnes of this place. He came to Utah in his youth and has made his home in Kaysville.

Mr. Barnes' death is particularly sad because it marks the culmination of a series of bereavements that has made his home life tragic, and it leaves his widow to bear alone not only the sorrows of death, but of afflictions worse than death. Not a day for nearly twenty years has there been in which the burden of affliction has been lifted from the doomed habitation. One after another of the family has developed from infancy to childhood only to suffer mental collapse, blindness, and ultimate death. The children were bright and active up to nine or ten years of age and then some epileptic ailment that has baffled every possible effort of physicians throughou7t the state has seized them and robbed them of sight and other senses, though in each case life has been prolonged until maturity, when death has come to relieve the sufferers. Four adult children, three boys and a girl, have gone in this way;l another girl is no afflicted. Three years ago a son who had escaped the family malady, sickened and died suddenly, and now the father has been called, leaving a wife in poverty and bowed down with grief. The entire community mourn with the widow and surviving members of the family. The funeral services are to be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Kaysville meeting house.
