Mattie Gibson, age 89, a resident of Pennville, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Jay County Hospital in Portland.

Mattie was born on May 25, 1924, in Norton, Virginia, the daughter of Willard and Lurlie (Gilly) Gibson. She worked as a teacher at Pennville High School from 1956 until 1975. She then worked for Jay County High School from 1975 until 1984. She was a member of the First Church of God in Norton, Virginia and attended Sugar Grove Church of the Nazarene in Portland. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Dappa Gamma, Pennville American Legion Auxiliary and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-6 p.m. at the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Pennville. Funeral services will follow on Monday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at a later date in the Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
