Steven Lamb Rodgers, 71, of Odessa passed away Friday, November 25, 2005, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He was born August 1, 1934, in Madisonville, KY to Ben and Vina Lamb Rodgers. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Doris Coleen Rodgers, and his brother Joseph Rodgers.
Steve graduated from Augusta Tilghman High School in Paducah, KY and Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA. He married Margie LeCureux Hale on June 18, 1977, in Odessa.
He entered the United States Army in 1955 and retired at the rank of Major in 1976. He served three full tours in Vietnam (1964-65, 1967-68, 1971-72) as a helicopter pilot. He was awarded the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, in addition to the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He taught J.R.O.T.C. at Odessa High School from 1976 to 1984. He founded Stemarco, Inc., an engraving firm, in 1981, and was currently the owner.
Steve was a member and past president of the Odessa Tri-Service Lions Club. He served as District Governor of Lions Clubs International, Executive Director of the Lions Eye Bank Permian Basin, and District Director of the Texas Lions Camp. He received the Cullen Akins Award in 1989 as Lion of the Year for District 2-T3. He was a progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, a progressive Jack Weich Fellow, a Texas Lions Foundation Fellow, and a life member of the Texas Lions Camp.
Steve was a member of the Builders Class of First United Methodist Church which he previously served as teacher. He was also a life member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Steve is survived by his wife, Margie Rodgers of Odessa, daughters Stephanie Wynn Strain of Bowling Green, KY, Ramona Russell and husband Mark of Odessa, Frances (Bené) Fann and husband Jerry of LaVergne, TN, step-son David Hale of Chicago, IL, grandchildren Carol Rey Ollinger, Travis Strain, Luke Russell, Jacob Strain, Hope Russell, Katherine Fann, Hannah and Sophia Hale, great-granddaughter Daizy Lindvall, and mother-in-law Theo LeCureux.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29. Funeral services will be at First United Methodist Church, 415 North Lee, Odessa, TX, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30 with Rev. Donnie Williams officiating. Military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are Shawn Clapper, Roger Cash, Gordon Gillette, Clifford Ray, Val Wilcox and Joe Parish.
