U.S. Congressman. Educated at Washington College, he then became successful in agricultural pursuits, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Entering politics, he was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives. (1844, 1847, 1858 to 1859) and served in the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1849 to 1851, 1861 to 1863). In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving until 1869. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State constitutional convention, in 1872 and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1875 to 1876, 1878). He was again elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving (1883 to 1885). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he again served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1893 to 1896).
