Gibbens

12/28/1939 - 2/3/2014

William Vern Gibbens, age 74, of Oakridge, OR, passed away in his home, Monday, February 3, 2014 of cancer, with his beloved wife Dana by his side. He was born December 28, 1939 in Springfield, Colorado to Robert and Mildred Estalee Gibbens. When Vern was 5, the family moved to Oregon in search of work and eventually settled in Springfield. Always an entrepreneur, his dad instilled a good work ethic in Vern. His first job was running a worm farm business, selling worms to the fisherman along the McKenzie Hwy. Vern raised goats, chickens, and a few beef cattle on the family's small acreage. He also had a paper route for years, worked at the local drug store, and worked in the woods in the logging industry. As a teenager in the 50's, he loved cars. Dad allowed him to buy a 1940, 4-door Buick at age 14 1/2 . He and his buddies worked on it and learned to drive on their property. By 1955 Vern had saved enough money to purchase his first new car, a 1955 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner. It was his pride and joy. Vern worked and played hard and loved life. He was very athletic and lettered in track and was involved in many school activities. He graduated from Springfield High in 1958 and went on to college earning an Associates Degree in Business. He started skiing while in high school and later became a ski instructor at Hoodoo on weekends.

Vern married young, and had two children and divorced. He is survived by his wife, Dana, his sister Celeste Vaughters, or Portland, his son Mark Gibbens, of Bend, and his daughter, Julie Rodriguez, who lives in Tennessee with her husband and two sons. Vern found the love of his life while they were both working in the grocery industry in Eugene. He married Dana Tracy on November 28, 1992, in Maui, HI. Vacations were spent in Hawaii and on the slopes of the ski resorts throughout the Northwest for their entire life together. Vern was a "people person" and natural salesman. His career lead him first into retail sales management, and then on to grocery distribution sales and management. Many will remember Vern as the "Hoody's nut guy", as he spent over 25 years with Hoody's Corporation. Later Vern moved on to have his own Grocery Brokerage business for a few years.

Vern was fortunate to be able to retire at age 60. Vern recalled good times with his dad fishing and hunting around the Oakridge and Central Oregon areas. Vern and Dana bought property in Oakridge in the early 1990's and finally designed and built their dream home along the shores of the Willamette River in 2005. He enjoyed golf, skiing, boating, traveling and gardening and totally just loved being home with Dana.

Special thanks to the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and the wonderful people at PeaceHealth Hospice of Sacred Heart. If friends and family want to remember Vern, he would want you to donate time or money to your favorite charity . In the spring, the family will plan a Celebration of Life in Oakridge where Vern loved to be. Cremation arrangements by Andreason's/Buell Funeral Chapel of Springfield.
