Living in Chicago for 14 years, he decided to move west in 1884 on account of his health. He settled on a timber claim near Verdigre.

The prosperous family continued to live there until 1904, when Mr. Smolek moved to town to run a saloon for about four years, then, retiring the balance of his days.

Mr. Smolek being one of the early settlers experienced all the hardships of the pioneer, but by honesty and ceaseless energy succeeded in providing for his large family, which at the time of his death is left in comfortable circumstances.
