Joseph Smolek was born in Bohemia in the year 1846 and died at his home in Verdigre at half past eight Friday morning, June 14, 1912.

The deceased came to this country in 1870 and was united in wedlock to Mary Poplar in Chicago in 1871. Nine children were born to this union, five boys and four girls, all of whom are living, three being married. They are John, Frank, Edward, Jake, Tom, Mary Yoch, Chicago, Anna Vokner, Lynch, Katie and Emma.

Living in Chicago for 14 years, he decided to move west in 1884 on account of his health. He settled on a timber claim near Verdigre.

The prosperous family continued to live there until 1904, when Mr. Smolek moved to town to run a saloon for about four years, then, retiring the balance of his days.

Mr. Smolek being one of the early settlers experienced all the hardships of the pioneer, but by honesty and ceaseless energy succeeded in providing for his large family, which at the time of his death is left in comfortable circumstances.

Interment took place at the ZCBJ cemetery last Sunday morning at 10:30 under the charge of the ZCBJ Lodge to which he belonged.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves a brother Frank, in Chicago to mourn his decease.
