Winston Clay Thomson, 87, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg, Virginia.
He was born February 13, 1927, son of the late Alfred Strong Thomson and Glennye Lockard Thomson. His sister, Jane Burroughs Thomson Haar and her husband, Warren and his beloved wives, Sarah Littleton Thomson (1969) and Arlene Tweedy Yuille Thomson (2000) also predeceased him.
He married his dearly beloved wife, Mary Norvell Millner Thomson of Westminster Canterbury in 2003, who survives him. Also surviving are his precious stepdaughter, Sarah Yuille Clarke and her husband Walton of Atlanta and a cousin, Mary Lockard Clark of Indiana.
Clay was a 1945 graduate of Virginia Episcopal School and of Washington and Lee University, the class of 1950. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1953. Upon discharge he joined banks in Fairfax and Alexandria, Virginia, later moving to Charlottesville in 1967 where he was associated with The National Bank and Trust Company.
Upon retiring, he and his wife, Arlene, moved to Lynchburg. There he became interested in various community and charitable organizations, serving as a volunteer at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Interfaith Outreach and on the Board of the Academy of Music.
Being a newcomer to Lynchburg, Clay made a wide range of friends on the tennis court for which he always felt most fortunate. The games and those friends brought him much joy.
There will be a private inurnment in the chapel at the Old City Cemetery followed by a memorial service and reception at Westminster Canterbury at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014 in the Commons Room.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Westminster Canterbury Foundation.
Diuguid Funeral Service-Wiggington Road Chapel, 385-8900, is serving the family.
