Gertrude was the eighth child of John F. Giles and Nellie Kazee. She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Sciotoville, Oh. Her first marriage was to W.C. Clark, whom she married before 1928. In 1928, she signed the death certificate for her sister, Valley/Violet Grant, as Gertrude Clark; and at the time of the 1939 death of her brother, Robert, she was shown as Mrs. W.C. Clark, of Sciotoville, Oh. Some in the family state that Mr. Clark died in a hunting accident.

Gertrude's second marriage was to Floyd Mitchell Fannin, who was born on 31 Mar 1891 in Ky., a son of William Fannin (b. Oct 1853, Ky.1) and Polly Adkins (b. Nov 1864, Ky.1). Floyd worked in the blooming mill at Detroit Steel Corp. in New Boston, Oh. Gertrude and Floyd lived in Portsmouth, Oh. They had no children, but from a previous marriage, Floyd had six sons—Arthur, Vincent, Thomas, Chalmer, Troy and Tennyson. Floyd died of bladder cancer. Gertrude died of cardiac arrest and arteriosclerosis.
