Frances Mourning (Blackshear) Allen was the wife of Matthew Tolbert Allen who born 20 June 1829 in either Irwin or Thomas County, Georgia. They married 06 January 1863 in Henry County, Alabama. Matthew volunteered to be a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War. He was gone only a short time and was killed at the Battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks in Virginia on 31 May 1862. He did not see his daughter, Martha Ella, as she was born after his death. Frances died in 1865. Their five children were sent to live with Blackshear siblings of Frances Mourning. The two older girls went to live with Joseph P. Blackshear, the two boys went to live with Moses and Elizabeth (Allen) Blackshear, and the three year old baby girl went to live with Elizabeth (Blackshear) Boyd Allen.
