RANGER & FIRST SPECIAL SERVICE FORCE, WWII

Son of George and Rosa Whited, born in Middlesboro, KY.

Enlisted for military service at Fort Benjamin, Harrison, Indiana October 23, 1941, prior to enlistment Murel was living in Michigan and was employed by Sacks Furniture Company in Monroe, Michigan.

Murel Whited was awarded the Silver Star medal for gallantry in action while serving as a Technician 4th Grade with the Ranger Battalion in Sicily, Italy in July 1943:
"Technician Fourth Grade Whited while stationed near a small bridge, acting as a connecting file between units of his company, was approached by eight enemy motorcycles with two or three men on each, some with machine guns mounted. He signaled the leading motorcycle to stop but the signal was ignored and the enemy opened fire. Technician Fourth Grade Whited returned the fire with a sub-machine gun thereby stopping all eight of the motorcycles and killing and wounding at least ten of the enemy. His coolness and courage under fire were an inspiration to his men and are deserving of the highest praise. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Military Forces."

In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force in recognition of its superior service during World War II.

On February 3, 2015 surviving FSSF Veterans were in Washington DC to accept this momentous recognition on behalf of their fellow Forcemen who could not be there.
