The surname Hillegonds is a so-called matronymic, originally meaning "Child of mother Hillegond". Matronymic surnames are very rare in the Netherlands, but patronymics (child of father ...) are quite common, for instance Jans(s)en, the most common surname in the Netherlands.
In 1947 there were only still 7 persons in the Netherlands with the surname Hillegonds, 5 in Amsterdam and 2 in the province Noord-Holland, likely in its northwestern part. In 2007 there were less than 5 persons in the Netherlands with the surname Hillegonds, so they are dying out or have already died out in their home country, but are "surviving" in the USA.
On May 1, 1847 laborer Arie Hilllegonds married in municipality Zijpe at the age of 25 years the two years older Marijtje Schager, also born in municipality Zijpe.
Arie Hillegonds and Marijtje Schager had the following children:
1) Stillborn son, 29 April 1848, Zijpe;
2) Trijntje, 8 May 1849, died 19 May 1849, Mennonietenbuurt, Zijpe;
3) Jan 8 July 1850, Mennonietenbuurt, Zijpe, died in 1882 in Groet, Noord-Holland;
4) Pieter, 24 June 1852, Belkmerweg, Zijpe;
5) Jacob, 21 August 1853, Belkmerweg, Zijpe;
6) Antje, 23 September 1855, Belkmerweg, Zijpe;
7) Cornelis, 8 March 1859, died 9 March 1859, Aan het Kanaal, Zijpe;
8) Cornelis, 16 November 1860, Aan het Kanaal, Zijpe;
9) Trijntje, 21 April 1862, Aan het Kanaal, Zijpe;
10) IJf, 30 April 1865, died 14 May 1865, Aan het Kanaal, Zijpe.
Son Jacob Hillegonds (1853) emigrated in 1881 or 1882 with his wife and children to the USA. Sons Cornelis (1860) and Pieter (1852) did the same in 1890 and 1893. The other son, Jan (1850) stayed in the Netherlands, but had only one daughter, so Arie didn't get grandsons in the Netherlands, very probably the main reason that the surname Hillegonds is dying out or has already died out in the Netherlands; in 1947 there were only still 7 persons living in the Netherlands with the surname Hillegonds, 5 in Amsterdam and 2 in the rest of the province Noord-Holland, likely in its northwestern part. In 2007 there were less than 5 persons, so possibly no one, in the Netherlands with the surname Hillegonds. And in 2014 there was not any Hillegonds mentioned in the phonebook of the Netherlands. So they are dying out or have already died out in their home country, but are "surviving" in the USA
In October 1876 his wife Marijtje Schager died at the age of 56 years in the village of Petten, located at the Northsea in the northwestern part of the Dutch western province Noord-Holland. Widower Arie Hillegonds died there too, in February 1897, at the age of 75 years.
