Phillip Leisle was recorded in the draft registration on June 5, 1917 age 21 born November 16, 1895 in Privalnjoe, Samara, Russia.

He was a farmer working for his father and was a naturalized citizen with an address of Route G, Box 72, Fresno, California.

He was tall and slender built with dark blue eyes and dark brown hair.

From his son Ed Leisle:

I found my father's Army discharge papers and also the battles in which he took part. He was in three battles: Saint-Mihiel Offensive, Meuse-Argonne Offensive and & Ypres-Lys Offensive, all in 1918.

It was in the Argonne that he had gotten gassed because he hadn't gotten his gas mask on in time. He told me that if he would have vomited in his gas mask he would have died like others did.

When he was lying in the field hospital they had hung the blankets around him like they did the others when the soldiers died and it was at this time that my Father prayed to his God that he would be spared and that he would be able to get back home and have his own family. While he was lying in this hospital bed in the middle of the night praying this prayer, his Mother in the middle of the day in Fresno, California had a terrific burden on her heart for her son. She ran out of the house and there was a whirlwind came thru the house and blew all the doors open and shut and then there was a real stillness. As near as we can figure it was at the same time that my Father was in his situation. Needless to say this prayer was answered for he came home and in 1920 married my Mother and they had 3 children, Elmer, Myself and Marie.

I thank God for that answered prayer.
