Glenn William Oakes, age 94, of Burdett, N.Y., passed away Sept. 18, 2016 at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, N.Y. He was born July 9, 1922 in Towanda, Pa., the son of Daniel Oakes and Phoebe Kitchen Oakes.
Glenn attended Towanda public schools, graduating in 1940. He entered Pennsylvania State University (then Pennsylvania State College) in the fall of 1940.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Dec. 5 1942 and was called to active duty in May 1943. He had basic training and graduated from Army Finance School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. He had overseas training at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo. He served in the 8th Air Force in England and was honorably discharged on Nov. 23 1945 at Sioux Falls, S.D. with the rank of Corporal.
He returned to Penn State and graduated in July 1946 with a BA in economics and business administration. His choice for a career was the U.S. Merchant Marine. He sailed as a Purser from November 1946 to March 1985. He sailed mainly with United States Lines and American Export Lines on the SS Constitution, SS America, and the Superliner United States. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.
He graduated from U.S. Public Health Service Hospital on Staten Island, N.Y., as a Marine physician assistant. He sailed the last 15 years of his career in U.S. Lines' cargo liners as Purser and medical officer to the Far East.
He was made a Master Mason in Rural Amity Lodge No. 70, Athens, Pa., on Feb. 12 1946. He was also a member of Lehigh Scottish Rite Consistory in Allentown, Pa., and was a 32nd degree Mason.
He resided in Bradenton, Fla., in winter and at his summer home on Seneca Lake near Hector, N.Y.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3 at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. Fourth St., Watkins Glen. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, and burial will be held at 1 p.m. at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens, Pa., with military honors and a Masonic service.
