TOLONO – David Dwight Harden, 59, of Tolono died peacefully in his home on Thursday (Feb. 20, 2014) after battling cancer off and on for the last six years.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of 36 years; a son, Nathan David Harden; a daughter, Tonya Hartman (Dan); two grandchildren, Alyssa (nickname Bissy) and Brooke; and his mom, Betty Harden, all of Tolono.

Also surviving are his twin brother, Dwight David (Linda); and sisters, Roxanne Turner (Jeff), Michelle Ellars (David "Catfish"), Marilyn Chancellor (James), and Pam Hayden.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Harden, and countless others from the Harden/Wishall Clan of Tolono.

He was born on Jan. 28, 1955, just minutes before his brother Dwight to Jerry and Betty Harden of Tolono.

He married Carolyn Mintz of Tolono on July 2, 1977. He welcomed his son into the world on Sept. 21, 1978, and then a daughter on Sept. 7, 1979.

He started working at Wickes, now Pro Build, in Tolono after he graduated high school working in the lumber yard and eventually graduating to an outside salesman driving a pickup truck and selling to the local contractors.

He also served 20 years for the Volunteer Fire Department of Tolono.

He also coached his children's softball and baseball teams as they grew up through the years.

He lived life to the fullest and loved to give anybody and everybody a hard time. But most of all he loved to laugh and smile.

He would always start his day in Tolono at what he called the local coffee club. He never missed a morning without his jug-of-coffee; half french vanilla and half coffee and head out for the morning gossip at the club. He would then visit contractors on his daily run and have lunch either at Hooters with his brother or down at the Corner Cafe in Chesterville.

By evening he would enjoy spending time at home harassing his granddaughters who were the apple of his eye or watching Illinois basketball on TV which he got to watch one last time on the eve of his death and see them get a victory.

He will be missed by all, but his memory will live on forever in our hearts.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Freese Funeral Home, Tolono, with prayer service at 4 p.m.

Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Tolono, with Rev. Patrick Riordan officiating. Private burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Tolono.

Memorials may be made to Cancer Treatment Center of America.
