Caroline Frances McNerney, age 98, went to her eternal reward on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, in her home at Mt. Vernon, Missouri. She was born Dec. 9, 1915, to Paul II and Christine (VanHatten) Probstfield, the fourth of 11 children, at Verona, MO. She attended Crescent School, Sacred Heart School and High School in Verona, where Caroline loved playing basketball and being in class plays.

She married T. Robert McNerney on June 11, 1940, in Verona. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1993.

Their four children were: James, who became a priest of Subiaco, AR (Fr. Malachy, OSB-deceased July 1997), Joyce who became a Benedictine Sister and was assisting her in Mt. Vernon, Roger, who was developmentally disabled and died in October 1997, and Richard and wife, Joan of Monett. Caroline was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, Paul III, Ruth (Evans), Captain Edgar, John, Ralph, Lawrence, Clarence, Victor (Fr. Edgar, OSB), Jim "Pup", and Vernon (Fr. Regis OSB).

She is survived by one daughter, one son, four grandchildren, Francine Gory, Janice Brown, James and Mark McNerney; four great-grandchildren, Greta and Cora Gory and Parker and Dylan Brown.

Caroline worked in the Verona Hospital, and then as a care-giver and maid in Springfield. After marriage she worked at MWM Color Press as a proofreader and at the Mt. Vernon Chest Hospital as a laboratory technician, retiring in 1981. She and her husband moved to Mt. Vernon in 1966 and became members of St. Susanne Church. She cherished her Catholic Faith which sustained her through the early death of her father, the death of her beloved brother, Captain Edgar in WWII, the deaths of her mother, her husband, two sons within three months, and of all her siblings, plus the crippling accidents of her two surviving children.

A loving mother, Caroline was privileged to have a keen intellect and a passion for learning. She enjoyed stimulating conversation, clever jokes, being with family and friends, working crossword puzzles, growing flowers, and listening to the Lady Bear's basketball games.

She held responsible positions in many organizations in her church. She helped start the Christian Neighbors Association in Mt. Vernon to offer housewares, clothing and shoes to needy children and families.

A Funeral Mass under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 17, 2014, at St. Susanne Catholic Church in Mt.Vernon. Rosary and Prayer will begin at 6:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, in the funeral home chapel.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kitchen in Springfield, St. Susanne Parish, or the Tri-County Pregnancy Center in Aurora in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared at
