SW-3 Emory Jason Turpin, U.S. Navy, age 23, of Dahlonega died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, when he drowned in the Seychelles off the coast of Africa while serving on active duty with the U.S. Navy.

Turpin was assigned to the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74, currently deployed to the Seychelles in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

He was a native of Hall County who had lived in Lumpkin County most of his life. He was a 2001 graduate of Lumpkin County High School, and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Luther Turpin.

He is survived by his parents, Roy and Judy Turpin, Dahlonega; brothers, Keith Highfield and Kerry Highfield, both of Gainesville, and Kenneth Turpin, Dahlonega; grandmother, Virginia Turpin, Dahlonega; and grandparents, H.W. and Eulene Wilson, Oakwood. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Lumpkin County with the Rev. Charles Buice officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends after noon Tuesday at the funeral home.
