Private First Class William N. Atkins was killed in action during WWII. He was a Rifleman in company C.
At that time his unit was part of the Third United States Army serving under General Patton. Which was attempting to cross the Bleis river in assault boat's. It was during this crossing that the boat William was riding in struck an obstacle in the river and capsized, due to the very swift waters he drowned.
In a letter dated 12 Jun 1945 he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal by the direction of the U.S. President.
