Lt. Col. Daniel Stanley Burr was born to the late Stanley and Lois Burr on July 3, 1934 in Muskegon, Michigan. Throughout his life, he had an insatiable appetite for knowledge, where reading was one of his favorite hobbies. He loved and cherished spending time with his many friends. He liked nothing more than to discuss politics over a good cigar and an adult beverage. He served 22 years in the US Air Force as a pilot, having participated in the Vietnam War where he flew 138 missions. For his bravery in combat, he received three Distinguished Flying Cross medals. His favorite planes were jets but he flew many types of aircraft. His last station of duty was at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, TX, where he retired from the Air Force (1976), to continue his life of service through civic engagement. His public service activities were numerous and spanned more than 40 years. Among his many service activities, he was elected a member of the Del Rio City Council,, also serving as utilities commissioner. For this service, he was awarded the Key to the City of Del Rio. He was a member of the Val Verde County Hospital Board and a member of the regional water planning group. He was also appointed Airport Manager for the Del Rio International Airport, where he guided the modernization of this facility. He served as election clerk and judge for local, state, and federal elections. He was a long-time member of the Del Rio Lion's Club, serving many years as its secretary. He delivered meals to shut-ins through the meals-on-wheels program and he served as a volunteer member of hospice. In sum, he was generous with his time and energy in many public and notable ways. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Jeanne Gabel, in 1954. They were married for 43 years before her death in 1997. In 2003, he married the second love of his life, Betty Ann Christopoulos Jameson. They moved to San Antonio, Texas in June 2013 to begin a new life. He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann, sons Jeff (Jan Mutchler), Jerry (Linda), and Joe, and a daughter, Julie (Hammock). He is also survived by four grandchildren, Tamra Heidt, Justin Hammock, Risa Burr and Kasey Burr, and two great-grandchildren, Felicity Heidt and Joseph Hammock. He is survived by his loving sister, Sandra Burr Rezny and her family, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Colonel Burr was predeceased by his sister Barbara Burr Gattorn and his brother Norman.
