C. V. Floyd was a piano tuner and traveled frequently. While in Hallettsville, Texas (Lavaca County), he was shot and killed while he entered the Park Hotel where is was registered under the false name of W. H. Lehman. Accused of the murder were the McDade brothers, R. R. McDade, Jr. and John F. McDade. Four shots were fired upon Floyd and he died instantly. He was neatly dressed, clean-shaven and unarmed. The McDade brothers reportedly searched for Floyd and questioned him briefly about their sister. It seems that Floyd had deserted the McDade's sister after falsely marrying her. The sister was at Eagle Lake, Texas and was taken home by family members. It is unclear where her home was located. The McDade brothers were arrested, but later released after the judge directed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty. The McDade's came from a very prominent family in Hempstead, Texas. Dr. Gregory, who was the brother-in-law of C. V. Floyd went to Hallettsville, to make arrangements for Clifton V. Floyd's funeral and burial.
