He was born May 20, 1936, in Shreve to Guy and Olive (Unkel) Shaffer.
He had lived in Wayne County all of his life and had served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired truck driver after many years of driving, and was an avid motorcyclist. He lived to ride his Honda Goldwing.
Surviving are a sister, Doris Greuey of Wooster and a daughter, Cathy Carrier.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim Shaffer Sr.; and sisters, Ellen Bennett and Gerri Beck.
A military service with honors will be Friday, Feb. 21 at 1:30 p.m. in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
As Jack wished there will be no calling hours or other services. Jack always said "if you wanted to see me … you should have come when I was alive." That was Jack!
