Pilot Officer Smith lost his life in the crash of 14 SFTS's Yale #3429 aircraft in the low-flying area five miles south-east of Aylmer. He and Leading Aircraftman John McKINNON, who also perished in the accident, were engaged in flying sequence exercises when the crash occurred.
Pilot Officer Smith was interred in the Shaarey Zedek Section of Roselawn cemetery with full military honours.

Son of Jacob and Rose (née Fine) Smith of Toronto [both parents born in Russia]; husband of Mildred Smith of Toronto; father of Sheldon Stanley Smith and Maxine Smith.
