Naval Academy officials on Tuesday identified the midshipman who was found after apparently crashing his SUV into College Creek as Max Allen, a senior from Virginia.

Allen's SUV was discovered in the water Sunday, after a passerby noticed part of the post-and-chain link fence along the water near Nimitz Library was missing.

Officials do not know when he crashed the SUV into the water and said it could have happened as early as late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Allen, 25, was on track to become a Naval flight officer after graduation in May. He was an oceanography major and was a member of the club soccer team, the Italian-American Club and the Japanese-American Club, according to academy officials.

Allen, from Chesterfield, Va., attended Haverford High School in Pennsylvania and studied at Virginia Tech for two years before joining the academy, officials said.

He spent part of last summer on the USS George Washington aircraft carrier for training.
In a story posted online by the Navy last summer, Allen said he found it useful to see ship operations firsthand.
