“I’ve fought a good fight, I’ve finished the race. I’ve kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7.
“Don’t you realize that Christ gave up everything so you could be free?” Galatians 5:1
Bettye Fryer went to meet her beloved Lord and Savior Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, after a long and courageous battle as a stroke victim.
Bettye was born Jan. 3, 1933, in Old Hickory, Ark., to Alva and Imo Pruett. She married Gene Fryer on June 23, 1951, and spent her life as a loving wife and mother of four children and loving grandmother of four grandchildren. Bettye was raised, instilled with the value of hard work and that she did until she was struck by a stroke. Bettye was a very independent, feisty woman and she enjoyed nothing more than her gardening, being outdoors, planting her garden and flowers. She was an avid football and basketball fan. She attended every Odessa High School football game, and never missed a Dallas Maverick basketball game and saw them play in person a couple of seasons ago. That was one highlight in her life. Bettye was an active member of Sherwood Church of Christ, until she was struck by a stroke and loved her church family.
Bettye was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; and her mother and father, Alva and Imo Pruett.
Left behind to share Bettye’s memories are her children, Becky Whitaker and husband, Bill, of Odessa, Kathy Whalen of Odessa, Debbie Boxley and husband, David, of Wimberley, and Scott Fryer of Odessa; grandchildren, Joseph Whitaker of Arlington, Justin Boxley of Chicago, Ill., Lindsay Whalen of Denton, and Josh Boxley of San Marcos. Bettye is also survived by a brother, Bill Pruett of Malden, Mo.; aunt, Ola Rhea Wilson of Atkins, Ark.; three nieces; and a host of cousins and friends, as well as her Christian family.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Lynn Money officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to especially thank Laura Medrano, her sweet and precious caregiver and friend who was a Godsend to Bettye and her family, Home Hospice and Chris’ Country Retirement Home for their loving care and kindness throughout this most difficult time in Bettye and family’s lives.
Pallbearers will be: Jerry Whitley, R.N. Whitley, Alfred White, John Handley, Bobby Ragsdale and R.B. Hunnicutt.
