U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Williams College, in 1811, was a county clerk, (1815-20), studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Montrose, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1827-32), served in the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1833-37) and was Pennsylvania State Treasurer in 1840. In 1842, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Davis Dimock Jr., reelected to the Twenty-eighth Congress and served until his death.
