Her parents died when she was only 10 years old, and she was sent to lived with her aunt and uncle, Hattie and Grant Ohmart, in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
It was here that she met Montford Elwood Barber, and after their marriage they moved to Reno, Nevada, where they lived for many years.
