Austin in Sheffield, Berkshire, Massachusetts. In 1816, (the year without a summer) he journeyed with his family to Sheffield, Ohio to join his father's sister, Mary and her husband, Henry Root and family as some of the first settlers in the town which they named Sheffield. (Ohio) On August 10, 1830, after much consideration, he married his first cousin, Julia Ann Root. Their first home was on the shore of Lake Erie on a road that was later washed away.
Norman and Julia were the parents of seven children, Delia who married Judge George Steele in California, Richard who married Catherine Smith, Laura who married Theron Otis, Eliza who married Henry C. Bacon, twins Mary and Lydia and Charles. Mary never married. Lydia married Henry M. Fitch and Charles married Helen Lyman and moved to Wellsville, N.Y.
Norman ran a successful farm and was fondly remembered by his granddaughter, Richard's daughter Edith Day Allen.
