He was born September 9, 1935 in York, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Allen and Gwendolyn Russell.
After graduating from high school and two years of seminary, Don found his expertise to be in sales and spent 25 years with the Rodefeld Company in Indianapolis. He then worked for Robco, Sulphur Implement, Green Hills Memory Gardens, and spent the final years of his working career with Fred's Pharmacy when his illness forced him to retire in 2007.
Don was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Aerie 933 and was a former member of the Christ United Methodist Church both in New Castle. Don was the ultimate sports fan. He enjoyed playing golf, watching the Indianapolis 500, I.U. basketball, the Indianapolis Colts but especially enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports. He also enjoyed "piddling" in his yard, cooking and spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. Weekends would often find the family gathered at Don and Shirley's where he would spend many of his happiest times at his grill.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son, Brian (wife: Jo Wright) Russell of Alexandria, Virginia; a daughter, Lora (husband: Chuck) Flynn of New Castle; his grandkids, Ashley (husband: Brandon) Sowers, Taylor Flynn and Chris Flynn all of New Castle; his great-grandkids, Carson and Jaxon Sowers of New Castle; two brothers, Tim Russell of La Jolla, California and John (wife: Connie) Russell of Ft. Worth, Texas and two sisters, Esther (husband: Barry) Corman of Parachute, Colorado and Anita Russell of La Jolla, California.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Jim Russell and a sister, Gwen Hicks.
