In 1847 at the age of 18, James traveled to Andrew County, Missouri with his parents, John and Arisba Clizer and eight younger siblings. They were: Cassandra, Eliza, Joshua, Sarah, Charles, John Edward, Julia, and Benjamin. James was the only one in the family to revert to the spelling of the name that was used by his cousins in Virginia. Kleiser was also used. He married Louisa Best in 1854 and in 1855 they moved to Nodaway County, MO. In time he owned over 600 acres. He became connected with the stock-raising industry and was regarded as enterprising and reliable. Louisa died November 30,1874 at the age of 35 having had 11 children. On May 24,1877 James married Mary J. Hall, born in Andrew County on November, 7, 1844.
