Mrs. Verna Joy Bates age 74 of Centre passed away Wednesday September 1st at her residence. Funeral services for Mrs. Bates will be 3: PM Saturday September the 4th at Perry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Rainey officiating. Burial will follow at Cherokee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6:-8: PM Friday. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society or the family will accept flowers. Pallbearers: Carl Brown, Philip Bates, Darrell Bates, Drew Warren, Aaron Dobbins, Josh Swafford, Jerry Dempsey, and Tom Bonk. Mrs. Bates is survived by sons: Phil (Cathy) Bates of Cedar Bluff, and Bobby Bates of CO, Brother: Steven (Johnnie Lou) Swafford of Gaylesville, Sister: Susan (Chris) Miller of Horton AL, 9- Grandchildren and 10- Great-Grandchildren, special niece Shelly Swafford, several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her Husband: Ralph Bates, Daughter: Lisa Purucker. Mrs. Bates was a native of Piedmont the daughter of the late Dolphus and Pauline Flanagan Swafford. Verna worked as a caregiver before her retirement and was of the Holiness faith.
