Owen, Gallatin historian Carl N. Varble, 89, dies

SPARTA --- Carl N. Varble, former owner and operator of Varble's Clover Farm Store in Sparta, died Saturday morning at Carroll County Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Varble, 89, had operated the store for 47 years.

A local historian of some note, Varble was a member of both the Owen County and Gallatin County historical societies.

He also was a World War I veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was a deacon at Sparta Baptist Church.

Varble, widower of Fannie Varble, is survived by one brother, A. C. Varble of Louisville; three sisters, Maggie Bonham of Covington, Clara Mae Cavinall of Sulphur and Mildred Logan of Bedford; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sparta Baptist Church. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home in Warsaw and at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sparta Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sulphur Cemetery in Henry County.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sparta Baptist Church.
