Kerry Ian Kennedy, formerly of Lewiston, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at his mother-in-law's Lewiston home surrounded by his family. He fought a very courageous 13-month battle with a devastating brain tumor.

Kerry was born Nov. 27, 1954, to Hugh T. and Mae L. Kennedy in Cottonwood. The youngest of six children, he was raised in Craigmont. He worked for several farmers on the Camas Prairie, starting at an early age. While in school he was a standout athlete in several sports, graduating from Highland High School in 1973.

Kerry served in the Air Force from February 1974 to November 1977 and achieved the rank of sergeant. As an air cargo specialist, he was stationed in Dover, Del., and Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. He loved his time in the service and touring Europe, especially Spain.

Upon completing the Air Force, Kerry moved to Portland, Ore., where he worked and attended Portland (Ore.) Community College. He moved back to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in 1980, where he worked at Stegner Grain and Seed.

He met and married Linda May Allen Sept. 11, 1982, in Lewiston. They were blessed with their daughter, Shawna, June 11, 1983, "the apple of his eye."

Kerry continued working in the grain industry and also was employed by Redline Marine, Riddle Marine, Riverview Marina and Rogers Motors. He did steel tank construction and Agri-work for Western Farm Service of Reubens. Returning to Columbia Grain International Inc., in 1999, he was the manager of their elevator and barge-loading terminal at Central Ferry at the time of his illness.

Kerry was an avid fisherman and could be found on the area rivers and lakes going for "the big one." He had many outdoor interests throughout his life including water and snow skiing, hunting, fishing, car races and any do-it-yourself projects. He was a "hands on" guy, willing to help any family member or friend with their projects. Kerry was a 30-year member of the American Legion Post No. 38 in Craigmont, the Lewiston Eagles and was a member of the Whitman County Volunteer Fire Department.

His love of life, family, friends, working and playing hard was evident in everything he did and he will be missed by all.

Kerry is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda, at the family home; his daughter, Shawna of Lewiston; mother, Mae Kennedy of Spokane; mother-in-law, Floy Allen of Lewiston; brothers, John Kennedy and April of Lewiston, Tom Kennedy and Sue of Ocean Park, Wash., and Bob Kennedy and Connie of Clarkston; sisters, JoLynn Hill and Wayne of Coeur d'Alene and Patty Blakesley and Curt of Spokane; an uncle; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Kerry also had two bonus brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law and "his very special dog" Dakota.

Preceding him in death were his beloved father, Hugh Kennedy; father-in-law and friend, Donald (Buck) Allen; uncle, Tom Johnson, his wife, Phyllis, and their daughter, Roxanne; aunt, Cleo Johnson; and daughter, Connie Mae Beckel.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston.

Memorials may be sent to Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter, St. Joseph Home Health and Hospice or the oncology unit, or the charity of your choice.

Kerry was a man of the Earth. Look for him in the sunlight ripened grain.
