Governor of Alaska. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the Governor of Alaska Territory from 1957 to 1958. His father was a miner, young Michael attained an undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University and later received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame. Following service with the United States Navy during World War II, he practiced law privately in his native Fairbanks, Alaska. He became interested in the political arena and was elected to Alaska's Territorial Legislature in 1950, followed by terms in the Territorial Senate. In 1957, he was appointed by President Eisenhower to serve at the first Alaskan-born territorial governor. Stepovich will perhaps be best remembered for advocating that Alaska become a state. After leaving the governorship, he remained active in political causes with the Republican Party. Additionally, he resumed practicing law.
