Lou Ellen Smith, 89, of McAlester, died on July 15, 2018, at a local nursing center. Lou was born on September 17, 1928, in Haywood, to Clovis and Minnie Merideth Buse. She attended schools in Haywood and later would receive a GED from McAlester High School. She married William Smith on February 3, 1945, in McAlester. Through the years Lou Ellen worked for Seamprufe, Komar, Henson-Kickernick, Ideal Cleaning for several years and the McAlester Army Ammuntion Plant for eight years. Lou Ellen was a lifelong member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She loved to make quilts and belonged to the Kiamichi Quilt Guild and made quilts for the whole family. She was preceded by her parents; her husband, William Smith; daughter, Patricia Ellen Smith-Durant; three sisters; two brothers, and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Letha Smith. Funeral services will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Ulan Cemetery. The Rev. Gene Hankins will officiate.
