Major League Baseball Player, Manager. For eighteen seasons (1961 to 1978), he played at the shortstop, third baseman and first baseman positions with the Los Angeles/California Angels, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born James Louis Fregosi, he attended Serra High School in California. During his high school years, he excelled as the team's quarterback of their football squad, in addition to broad jumping and baseball. Signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1960, he was selected by the Angels during baseball's expansion draft that year. At the age of nineteen, he marked his Major League debut on September 14, 1961 and played in 11 games that year. By 1963, he was the Angels' starting shortstop and in 1967, he earned the Gold Glove Award. Offensively, he was a solid hitter and led the league with 13 triples in 1968. In late 1971, Fregosi was acquired by the Mets as part of a trade which sent star pitcher Nolan Ryan to the Angels. He retired 20 games into the 1978 season and succeeded Dave Garcia as manager of the California Angels that year. In 1,902 regular season games, he compiled 1,726 hits with a .265 lifetime batting average. He achieved all-star status six-times (1964 and 1966 to 1970). He served as a Major League manager for fifteen seasons with the California Angels (1978 to 1981), Chicago White Sox (1986 to 1988), Philadelphia Phillies (1991 to 1996) and Toronto Blue Jays (1999 to 2000). During his tenure with the Phillies, he guided the 1993 team to the National League Pennant. He totaled a 1,028 win, 1,094 loss managerial record. At the time of his death from a series of strokes, he was serving as Special Assistant to the Atlanta Braves' General Manager.
