Councilman Benjamin "Benny" Ritchey

Ritchey, 66, died at his home Wednesday.

Ritchey, a Mississippi native, lived in Lafayette most of his life, graduating from Lafayette High School and USL. He owned Benny Ritchey Real Estate and Insurance Agency and was a senior partner in Ritchey Computers.

He was a member of the first Lafayette City Council, and served as president in 1980 and 1981.

Ritchey was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. National Guard. He served as commander of the 199th Support Battalion, 256th Infantry Brigade. He received the Louisiana National Guard Distinguished Service Medal and the Louisiana Cross of Merit Medal.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette and worked with the Boy Scouts of America for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Simon Ritchey, five daughters, and five sons, including Deborah Mahony, Cynthia Brignac, Ben Ritchey Jr., James Ritchey, William Ritchey and Richard Ritchey of Lafayette.
