CLINTON

Katherine Rankin, 67, a retired teacher, died Tuesday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson from complications of a stroke. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today and after noon Thursday. Mrs. Rankin was a Amory native and a graduate of Mississippi College. She lived in Clinton 39 years and was an English, speech and drama teacher in the Jackson Public Schools for 20 years. She worked with the JPS relations team and had authored children's literature. Mrs. Rankin was known for her creative ways of teaching, said her daughter Nelda Bridgers of Vicksburg. "Teaching was such a way of life with her," she said. "She was the eternal teacher. Her teaching went beyond teaching. It was a ministry for her. She looked at is, as making a difference in a life." She said many of her mother's former students kept in contact with her. "She spent a bit of Thanksgiving with her former students," her daughter said. "A lot of her students stayed in contact with her through the years. Those who came to town would call her or come by to see her." She said during the last days of her mother's life, a former student Sandra Powell said this of her mother, "She totally changed the lives of so many people. She bought clothes, bought food and encouraged us. She made us feel like we could be somebody." Paul Rankin said his wife used puppetry in her teaching. "Her most famous one was Splinters In My Personality," her husband said. "It taught children about basic values, kindness, love, respect for others, fairplay."

Other survivors include: son, Allan E. Rankin of Mendenhall; mother, Essie Mitchell of Amory; brothers, Bobby Mitchell and Sammy Mitchell, both of Amory; and nine grandchildren.
