Admiral Sir Henry Harwood Harwood, K.C.B., O.B.E., R.N., was the British naval officer who, as a captain, commanded the squadron of cruisers which defeated the German pocket battleship ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE in the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. Following the battle, the GRAF SPEE, heavily damaged, fled to Montevideo, Uruguay, off which she was scuttled a few days later. For this action Harwood was promoted to rear admiral and knighted.
In April 1942 Harwood was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet, and later, when that command was split, he became Commander-in-Chief, Levant, with responsibility for flank support and seaborne supply of the British Eighth Army. In April 1944, Harwood became Flag Officer Commanding, Orkneys and Shetlands. He retired on 15 August 1945 with the rank of admiral.
