TUSCALOOSA | Henry Walter Goodman, died February 11, 2014, at DCH Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Henry was born July 27, 1919 in Hale County, Alabama to a family of twelve boys and one girl. Henry was the last surviving brother in his family. After graduation from high school he worked on the family farm before being drafted to serve in WWII. He was assigned to the 28th Infantry which was sent to Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. One of his memories from his service was when the army liberated Paris and he and his fellow soldiers were surrounded by women hugging and kissing them in gratitude. Of the medals Henry was awarded he was proudest of a letter from the Consul General of France thanking him for his service. After he returned home from the war he worked at Central Foundry until his retirement in 1981 after nearly forty years of employment. Henry and his wife, Dorothy, were founding members of West End United Methodist Church, St. Mark United Methodist Church, and active members of Union Chapel United Methodist Church.
Henry was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Lawson Goodman; his mother, Addie Brown Goodman; six brothers; six half-brothers; and one half-sister.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, sons, Don (Mary Beth), David, and Steve; grandchildren, David Jr., and Mark; great-grandchildren, Myles, John David, Gracie, Sammy, and Alex. Henry and Dorothy celebrated their sixty-seventh wedding anniversary on February 7th.
Henry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He will be missed and remembered by family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Tuscaloosa Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, February 14, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Paul Peoples will conduct the service. Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
