Son of John Lewis and Elsie Kate Hickman nee Smith of 27, The Causeway, Church Lane, Bicester, Oxfordshire, England.


Part of a two man crew that took off from RAF Manston, Margate, Kent at 13:45 on Friday 31st May, 1940 for a patrol over Dunkirk, France in a Bolton Paul – Defiant Mk I S/No. L6968.

After take off nothing further was heard and the aircraft was reported as missing, it was later discovered that it had been shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf109 off De Panne near Koksijde, Belgium.

There were no survivors and they are both buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.

 

The other crew member was,

LAC. Alfred FIDLER – S/No. 743039 – Wireless Operator – Air Gunner – RAFVR
