Son of John Greaves and Sarah. The familiy immigeated to the UnitedStates about 1853, setteling first in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

Abraham served three months with the 9th Rhode Island Infantry and three years with the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry during the Civil War.

An obituary was published in the Vermont Standard (Woodstock, Vermont) on December 30, 1897. "While his early advantages were limited, he had, by application and idomitable will, made much of them, till as a weaver he had few equals in mastering any loom built and bringing forth desired results.
