Ethel M Simpson, age 85, died at home surrounded by family on Thursday, Oct 27, 2011.

Ethel was born May.27, 1926, in Minneapolis. She moved to the Tri-City area in 1937.

After graduating Kennewick High School (where she lettered in basketball) she married the love of her life H Bernard "Bernie" Simpson.

They moved to Richland where he was employed on the Hanford project.

Over the years they raised two daughters, Cherie and Lori. Ethel was involved in Girl Scouts, school and church organizations. She was a long time member of Richland Lutheran Church and as a young woman was active in the Sunday school program and youth activities. Ethel began work at Kadlec Methodist Hospital in 1959, and retired from the position of Material Manager in 1984.

As committee chair she led the effort from 1985 to 1993. This successful endeavor is now part of Earth Day. When you see the flowering trees at John Dam Plaza you can say a thanks to Ethel.

Her retirement years were rich in family and travel experiences and being close to five grandchildren and two
step-granddaughters.

Ethel and her family enjoyed the outdoors and camping. The annual family reunion, held for more than 30 years at Priest Lake, Idaho, was one of the summer highlights together with traveling with her husband throughout the United States in their motor home. Ethel was an accomplished seamstress and tailor. A clever craftsperson, she gave special "one-of-a-kind" gifts to family and friends throughout the years.

Ethel is survived by daughters Cheryl (Bill Whitaker) Simpson-Whitaker and Lori (Mike) Hogan; five grandchildren:
Daniel (Susan Walter) Toepke; Matthew (Ebba) Toepke; Jennifer Toepke, Christopher (Bridget Mertens) Hogan and Joshua Hogan; step-grandchildren, Stephanie (Paul Ribbing)
