California Pioneer
Genealogist John Burson Dies at 89
John Charles Burson, 89, a prominent Lodian for 50 years, passed away at the home of his son, Dr. Stanley Burson, 1020 W. Locust st., following a short illness.
Mr. Burson, who would have been 90 years old in February, was an active member of the Bethel Tabernacle and assisted in its organization in the early 1920's. He was a member of the Lodi Masonic Lodge No. 256. Since his 1941 retirement from farming and the insurance business, Mr. Burson had lived quietly with his son, Stanley.
A native of Casey, Ohio, Mr. Burson was born Feb 10, 1862. In 1883 he married Amanda Ish in that city. Mrs. Burson passed away on April 21, 1925.
Admirer of California
An ardent admirer of California, Mr. Burson's first venture from his home state led him to the Oklahoma Indian Territory shortly after that portion of the country was thrown open to settlers. His family's dislike for the brawling pioneer life of Guthrie, Okla., sent the group trekking back to Ohio, after a short stay.
In 1901, he came to San Francisco by train, then by river boat to Stockton. Believing in Lodi's future growth, Mr. Burson sent for his wife and three children. They moved into a home on Sacramento st. and remained there for a number of years.
Owned Several Farms
At different times, Mr. Burson owned several farms in the Lodi district and was also engaged in the insurance business before his retirement at the age of 80 years. At the time of his death he still owned property in Acampo.
In later years, Mr. Burson spent much time and money compiling a family history which he published privately in 1931. Copies of his work were requested by and sent to the Library of Congress and the Pennsylvania Historical Society.
Found Old Documents
Up to the time of his death he retained a keen interest in this project. In the course of tracing family genealogy, Mr. Burson unearthed faded documents establishing the arrival of his ancestors in this country from England in 1684 in company of William Penn.
Other records disclosed the gradual change in the family name from the original Norwegian "Bur And Son" to its present form. Relatives plan to continue his efforts and maintain a continuing record of the family.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Burson and Raymond E. Burson, Lodi; and a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Burson Hawes, Acampo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Momday at the Bethel Tabernacle with the Revs. Harry Neet and T.A. Tousley officiating. Lodi's Masonic Lodge will conduct the graveside rites. Interment is to be in Lodi Cemetery under the direction of the Wells Funeral Home.
