Aug 11, 1878 he married Sarah Wood in Pettis, Missouri. In 1880 they were living in Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri with his brother and wife.. Their first son Charles "Charley" was born 2 Feb 1881 in Hustoney and their second son, James Harrison was born 16 Jul 1883 in White Station. Both in Missouri.

Sarah and James either divorced or she died as he married Emily Jane Shephard in 1886. They had 3 children together - Laura E Watts B:1888, Ida B Watts B:1891 and William Floyd Watts B: 1898.
It appears the family moved to Idaho or Washington around 1905. Emily and James divorced as few years later.

1910 Census shows him and wife, Ann Elizabeth, living in Spokane, Washington. He worked for S.P. & S Railway at that time. By 1920 he and Ann Elizabeth were living in Greenbank, Island, Washington and doing general farming. His wife, Ann, died in 1920 and on 14 Feb 1923 he married Julia "Forrest" Dale. He died in 1928 and Julia continued to live on the farm in Greenbank after his death.

J. H. Watts, a resident of Freeland, where he has been conducting a farm for some years died on Saturday last at the age of 73 years. The funeral was had in Coupeville on Wednesday, with interment in the cemetery here.
